Priligy Guide

What is Priligy and what is it used for?

Priligy (dapoxetine) is the first oral prescription drug approved for treatment of premature ejaculation (PE). Premature ejaculation is a recognized medical condition characterized by the inability to control ejaculation. A man affected with this condition experiences sexual climax (ejaculates) earlier than desired, which often leads to negative impact on man’s relationship and self-esteem.

Dapoxetine is a short-acting selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with a unique pharmacokinetic profile that acts on the neural pathways that control ejaculation. Dapoxetine is a short-acting and therefore need not be taken every day, but is only at needs 1-3 hours before anticipated sexual intercourse. Priligy is available in two doses – 30mg and 60mg.

Numerous researches suggest that ejaculation reflex arises as a response to a complex interaction of both physiological and psychological stimuli in the central nervous system. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter and the main neurotransmitter involved in the process that affects the time to ejaculation when the man is sexually stimulated.

Serotonin has an inhibitory effect on ejaculation, which may explain why some drugs that increase levels of serotonin also seems to delay the time to ejaculation. Today there are many different drugs that artificially raises the levels of serotonin in brain, called SSRIs. Unlike other SSRI drugs taken daily (and that is not approved for the treatment of premature ejaculation), so do the pharmacokinetic properties in Dapoxetine it is possible to take the tablets only when necessary.

Dapoxetine reaches the bloodstream quickly (within one hour) and then the drug is eliminated from the body rapidly.
